How it Works: Inputs and Outputs

Follow

TagStation receives events (songs, spots, promos) from your playout system. Upon receiving event input, TagStation looks for content that has been "linked" to the event for output.

For a song, linked content would include artist, title and album art; for a spot/promo, linked content would include artwork, text and interactions that have been configured in TagStation.

TagStation then returns (outputs) this information in two ways:

  • To NextRadio and connected cars via the Internet
  • Back through your playout system for broadcast over RDS and HD

Most automation systems cannot talk directly to TagStation, so a piece of datacasting software or "middleware" is required to facilitate communication between the interfaces. The combination of your automation system and middleware is referred to as your "Playout System."

Inputs

Example 1: A song

2_inputsongs.png

The song "Fame" by David Bowie fires from automation. Your playout system delivers the Artist, Song Title and Cut ID to TagStation. The first time this information is delivered, TagStation looks for a match in the Gracenote database. If it's able to make a match, the Gracenote data is linked to the song and the song is now ready for output.

From this point forward, every time "Fame" plays - TagStation will return the linked data for output.

Example 2: A spot/promo

3_inputspots.png

A spot fires from automation. Your playout system delivers the Spot ID to TagStation. TagStation looks for a campaign that contains the Spot ID. If a campaign exists, the details are linked to the spot and the spot is now ready for output.

Each time the spot is played, TagStation will return linked data for output (per the duration of the campaign).

Outputs

TagStation currently outputs data to the following locations:

  • the NextRadio app
  • RDS, if your playout system supports it
  • HD Radios, if you're set up for HD
  • connected car radios

Example 1: A song

Artist, Title, Album and Album Art are:

  • delivered via the Internet to NextRadio and connected cars
  • delivered to your playout system for broadcast over RDS and HD (data displayed depends upon receiver capability)

Example 2: A spot

Campaign data is:

  • delivered via the Internet to NextRadio and connected cars
  • delivered to your playout system for broadcast over RDS and HD (data displayed depends upon receiver capability)
